‘Tata Power Energy Club’, Mumbai is an Energy Conservation Club that focuses on bringing about a first-hand realisation of the energy crisis in the city of Mumbai.
Tata Power recognises the immense value of the contribution that Schools and Schoolchildren can make to help curb the wasteful usage of power. As the demand for power in the city is steadily increasing and energy resources are being rapidly depleted, it is vital to involve our youth, as decision-makers of tomorrow, in an initiative to avert a crippling power crisis.
This informal Energy Conservation Club comprising Schools and Schoolchildren has been formed to spark off a youth initiative for curbing energy-wastage through active measures, and also popularising the importance of this mission among fellow students. Tata Power Energy Club provides the ground for children to share and expand their understanding, and bring about a chain-reaction that can significantly reduce wastage of energy in the city. With adequate publicity, the Club will sensitise Mumbai’s citizens, and the spark can turn into a spreading flame of enthusiasm to protect our resources and environment.
The Project has 3 phases:
Phase-I (Sensitisation)
Tata Power sensitise schoolchildren of Grades VII to IX from 10 schools in Mumbai about energy conservation through audio-visual presentations, and by a guided trip to the Tata Thermal Power Generating Station. These inputs provide the students with an understanding of:
- The importance of energy conservation, and the city’s
dependence on electrical power.
- Increasing demand for energy and limitation of resources.
- Impact on the environment.
- Safeguards to prevent wastage of power in everyday life.
- The enormous amount of capital, resources and manpower required to generate electricity for the city.
Tata Power Company Limited will then:
- Instruct students in the interpretation of Electricity Bills, and conservation through energy-efficient use of domestic appliances.
- Explain and emphasize the role of awareness in the individual, the family and the community.
- Involve students in an exercise to monitor and reduce energy bills in their homes by adopting the energy conservation methods suggested.
- Select a team of Energy Champions from each school.
Phase-II (Impact Assessment)
This phase of the Project will focus on sharing the understanding acquired through Phase-I with others in the community. This process will involve the following:
- Each student will share information on energy conservation with at least 2 others and their families.
- Students undertaking this awareness drive will help the target families to bring down their electricity bills.
- Electricity bills will be monitored over 3-6 months to assess effectiveness.
- Every student will attempt to recognize, and curtail wasteful usage of energy in their schools.
Phase-III (Peer Group Education)
In this phase, 3-4 school teams with demonstrated commitment to energy conservation will be identified to form a peer group to carry out the sensitisation process in other schools. Tata Power will provide the expertise, information and tools necessary for the campaign.
This will accelerate the sensitisation drive and increase the outreach of the program through a cascading process. Schoolchildren will themselves be Energy Conservation Ambassadors responsible for inducting new members and spreading awareness. Peer-influence is a very effective factor in rousing interest and enthusiasm in children.
Club Activities
The Club would have monthly meetings of Energy Champions:
- To assess and review the progress of the Energy Champions and the participating schools.
- To allow students to interact and share experiences in this initiative.
- To plan periodic events such as essay-writing contests, slogan competitions, street theatre, poster development, art, craft and other cultural and creative pursuits in the preservation of the environment.
Tata Power Energy Club also aims at integrating the personality development of children and instilling in them, a concern for society. |
